One More Step

I am now registered for PS-MAPP classes, which is the Iowa foster parent training.  The downside is it will not start until late February.  In any event, I am excited to be taking a few steps further down the path.

In the meantime, I have been contemplating the two possible paths: foster to adopt or international adoption.  I still feel like international adoption is something I'd like to try, but the cost is so astounding that I don't know if it is worth it.  I also am torn about which country to adopt from.  As a single woman, my options are limited.  Right now I like Haiti, the Marshall Islands, Mongolia, Burundi, the Congo and Brazil as possible options.

As for foster to adopt, I am fascinated by the website adoptuskids.org which profiles kids available for adoption.  Just about any combination is available: 2, 3, 4, or up to 12 kids.  Boys and girls.  Infant to 18 yr olds.  All longing for families.

But in the meantime, I have to wait for the next step.

I'm so excited for you. Whatever path you go down, I think you will find the PS-MAP class to be helpful. It will give you 30 more hours of parent training than 90% of parents out there. And waiting until late February's not bad because otherwise Bethel intensives would have gotten in the way.

Even if you decide to do the international adoption, I would recommend doing some foster care first. It will help you learn the phases kids go through in adjusting to your home. We are in the middle of the "hell stage" right now (thats not an official title, it just feels that way). I am definitely seeing some of the dramatic ways that bringing a child into your home who has been raised in a home with different values differs from raising a biological child.

If you have any questions about the PS-MAP process, you can always ask me, we just went through it last February ourselves.

Thanks Ryan. I was worried about the intensives happening in the middle too.

I hope things get better. There are definitely challenges with foster care & adoption. I hope you get through your stage soon.

Hang in there!
